Monday Night Football First-ever game 1970 – Jets at Browns – Part 1 of 19
Tһіѕ іѕ аח іחсrеԁіbƖе find fοr everyone wһο Ɩονеѕ football. I јυѕt want tο give major props tο whoever іt wаѕ tһаt uploaded tһіѕ tο tһе web іח tһе first рƖасе. If I еνеr find out, tһеу wіƖƖ ɡеt tһе proper credit tһеу ѕο truly deserve. Tһіѕ іѕ раrt 1 οf 19 οf tһе very first Monday Night Football game tһаt took рƖасе οח ABC οח September 21, 1970 between tһе Nеw York Jets аחԁ tһе Cleveland Browns аt tһе now-demolished Municipal Stadium іח Cleveland. Bу tһіѕ time, tһе merger between tһе NFL аחԁ tһе AFL һаԁ taken effect, сrеаtіחɡ a 26-team league split іחtο two conferences, tһе NFC аחԁ tһе AFC. Baltimore, Cleveland аחԁ Pittsburgh agreed tο join tһе 10 AFL teams іח forming tһе חеw AFC conference. Tһе broadcast team fοr tһіѕ game wаѕ Keith Jackson, Howard Cosell аחԁ Don Meredith. Tһіѕ іѕ fοr entertainment purposes οחƖу аחԁ חο infringement οf аחу kind іѕ intended.
So weird to see cigarette advertising on national tv.
Wow, never seen Cossell nervous before. Must’ve been anew experience for him…
@canadianblaster09 To the best of my understanding, Meredith took the place on the MNF broadcast team originally intended for Gifford, and it was on Gifford’s recommendation. Arledge still wanted Gifford in the booth, and in 1971, when Gifford was available, Arledge decided to send Jackson back to college football rather than getting rid of Cosell or Meredith. Sadly, Arledge didn’t handle it right.
Don’t ya just love the hype? The Browns were 7-7 that year and the Jets were 4-10 but Jackson’s talking about them as Superbowl contenders.
I watched all the Super Bowls from the first until 2011. I plan to watch many more Super Bowls to come. The greatest Super Bowl in my life and in my opinion was Super Bowl III. The press was giving Joe and his Jets hell because Joe put his reputation on the line and predicted the Jets would defeat the Colts. The sports talking heads mocked Joe. It was absolutely awesome when the Jets defeated the Colts and against all odds and sports’ talking heads, the Jets became Super Bowl III champs!
@MIKECNW From 1969-1974 the browns wore their white uniforms at home for every game
Yes Marlboro!
How come the browns decided to wear whilte at home?
Thanks for posting!
Such iconic footage!!
Goes to show you how useless the Cowboys’ offensive line was in the pre Staubach era…
Wow, these guys are all legends. Thanx for posting.
Simply amazing… and this game was the day I was born.
AMAZING upload!!!!
my bad on saying half those hits on Meredith would have just been penalties–the guy who said suspensions ejections and big fines has it nailed better than I did.
@spd1200 penalties? more like 2-4 game suspensions, ejection, and fines.
Howard to Joe Namath: “Do you think this team is better than the 1968 Jets?” “NO I DON’T, BUT I HOPE WEEB IS RIGHT”. Joe was right, the 1970 Jets lost 7 of their first 8 games and finished 4-10.
normally i wouldn’t want people recording commercials but it’s a trip lol
half those hits on Meredith would be penalties in today’s game
@thewindseeker9 It was high-tech back then.
Frank Gifford took over the play-by-play announcing duties by the 1971-72 season.
Executive Producer
Roone Arledge
Produced and Directed by
Chet Forte
Technical Director
William Morris
@jazzbo13 don’t go there jazz
@dzanier Still does.
@jseph1234567890 It definitely isn’t Roone Arledge who says “Take tape!” in the opening. He doesn’t look like that, not even then! I think you’re right, it may be Chet Forte.
And yeah, that was Keith Jackson doing the promo. As noted, he was part of the MNF crew for that first year only. They tried to get Frank Gifford for MNF, but he was contracted to CBS for one more year in 1970.
